The parish helper

What does a parish helper do?

The parish helper (in Danish: sognemedhjælper) is involved in all sorts of activities that mostly take place during the week. S/he may be responsible for a network of volunteers who visit elderly people on a regular basis or for other types of social work. In some churches, the main task of the parish helper is to teach 3rd grade children about Christianity and to help prepare teenagers for confirmation.

The parish helper may be in charge of organising camps or weekends, help out in church cafés, in the youth club or during church services. Other responsibilities may include hymn singing with babies and their parents, cross-cultural work, or leading a group of people who together want to work through their grief following the loss of, for example, a child, a spouse or a parent.
