Danish names, old handwriting and terminology in Danish related to genealogy can turn out to be a challenge in searching the records. The Danish State Archives provide some useful information and tools for you to use as you go:

• Information on Danish names, i.e. use of patronymics, foreign names, use of Christian names, examples of names for boys and girls.

• Information on the type of handwriting that was commonly used in Denmark until 1875. Learning how to read this handwriting will often be not only practical but also necessary in order to use the records.

• A genealogical dictionary provides you with the Danish terms for most family relations and the translations of a number of other frequently used terms in genealogy, e.g. sogn (parish), fødsel (birth).
